Why Verydarkman Was Arrested: EFCC Finally Breaks Silence
In a move that has sparked widespread online debate, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially revealed the reason behind the arrest of popular social media figure and activist, Martins Vincent Otse—widely known as Verydarkman.
According to the EFCC, Otse was invited for questioning following a number of petitions alleging serious financial crimes. These allegations, which remain unspecified to the public for now, were considered too grave to ignore. Despite being sent multiple invitations through known addresses and communication channels, the Commission says Otse refused to respond—which led to his eventual arrest.
While many speculated that his outspoken criticism of the EFCC’s activities played a role in his detainment, the Commission was quick to clarify: his arrest had nothing to do with his online rants. In fact, the EFCC made it clear that such attacks, though “unguided and condemnable,” are being left for other law enforcement agencies to handle.
The EFCC insists that it followed due legal process by obtaining a Remand Order, and Otse is currently being held just like any other suspect under investigation. The Commission also confirmed that administrative bail has been offered, and his release hinges on fulfilling the bail conditions.
Finally, the agency had a message for the public: while it appreciates the passion and scrutiny Nigerians bring to its work, speculations and assumptions about its motives should cease. The EFCC urged everyone to allow it to carry out its duties “without fear or favour,” adding that charges will be filed once investigations are complete.
