Hilda Baci breaks world record for longest cooking time
Hilda Effiong Bassey, a Nigerian chef recognized as Hilda Baci, achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest duration of cooking by a single person.
Hilda Baci commenced a four-day cooking marathon on May 11 at Amore Gardens in the Lekki area of Lagos State. By 08:32 am on Monday, Hilda Baci had cooked continuously for 88 hours and 32 minutes, matching the previous record set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019, who cooked for 87 hours, 45 minutes, and 00 seconds. Consequently, Hilda Baci, a Nigerian chef, now holds the new record for the longest individual cooking time.
Hilda Baci expressed, “The journey to the cook-a-thon began five years ago. It has always been one of my greatest aspirations, and I’m thrilled that I took the courageous step to embark on this adventure. I have mentally prepared myself for this challenge, and I am proud to finally undertake it.”
She further explained, “The cook-a-thon also provides an opportunity to showcase the positive stories that arise from Africa through the meals we prepare. This endeavor serves as proof of the strength young people can demonstrate when given the right platform and support. I eagerly anticipate receiving support from people worldwide to accomplish this feat.”
Despite breaking the previous record, the 27-year-old Nigerian chef continues cooking at the time of this report. Hilda Baci has garnered enthusiastic support from numerous Nigerians, particularly youths who are present at the scene of this record-breaking event.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, paid a visit to Hilda Baci at Amore Gardens in Lekki to offer his encouragement. Additionally, Bolaji Idowu, the lead pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre Lagos, and actor Charles Okocha, among others, also visited to show their support.
In addition to these supporters, prominent Nigerian leaders including President-elect Bola Tinubu, Ogun State governor Dapo Abiodun, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi have voiced their support for Hilda Baci. Leveraging popular Nigerian social media slang, Tinubu referred to Hilda Baci as “Idan,” meaning she not only breaks but also sets records. He expressed, “We’re rooting for you, Hilda.”
Obi tweeted, “Hilda Effiong Bassey (Hilda Baci) aiming to surpass the current Guinness World Record by cooking nonstop for four days exemplifies the true Nigerian spirit of hard work and resilience. I applaud her determination and focus on the goal, which inspires many Nigerian youths to pursue their dreams through hard work and dedication.”
